Put Business Systems in Place

by Mark on August 27, 2007

Even solo entrepreneurs need business systems. Without a system, you’re just winging it and your results will reflect that approach. For one thing, when you wing it, unless you’re incredibly lucky, you’ll always be obsessed about getting more work. You won’t take time off and that obsession will eventually drive you nuts.

Systems are nothing more than easy-to-follow processes for each major element of your business. They need to be so easy that you can forget about them. You follow them automatically. Like riding a bike or driving a car.

The major business systems you must have in place include:

  • How you find prospects
  • How you get new business
  • How you communicate to clients
  • How you complete the work
  • How you bill for the work
  • How you follow-up with clients

These are the systems you need at a minimum. You’ll find that some of these systems are made up of other, smaller systems. If it’s too difficult or confusing to figure out how to create a system for one of these areas, break it down into smaller chunks.

Once you get a system in place and begin using it regularly, you can forget about it. The system becomes part of your regular routine. You’ll be amazed at how it simplifies your work life and makes you more efficient.

Why do you think millions of people stick with regular jobs? Because they’re nothing more than systems that you don’t have to think about. With your own business, though, you want to create systems so you can forget about the tedious aspects that keep fouling you up.

With systems in place, you can concentrate on the parts of your work that you love.

Hi there, I just wanted to thank you for this post, I’ve been searching all morning for just a basic understanding of what “business systems” are, and wasn’t finding anything of use until I got here. You had exactly what I was looking for!

Thank you,
Jeff
