Pinny Cohen over at Life of an Internet Entrepreneur has an absolutely fantastic post, Are You Keyword Optimizing Your Resume?
Now, the tips for how to do that are just great, but the idea itself really knocked me over. It never occurred to me to optimize keywords on your resume, but it makes perfect sense.
As Pinny points out, recruiters search for particular keywords when looking on sites like Craigslist and Monster.com, which only makes sense. But, what really struck me was the idea that you can look through a list of the most searched-for terms (which Pinny links to, by the way).
Using that list, you just might be able to see that recruiters are looking for skills you have, but are using keywords that you haven’t used in your resume. So, rewrite your resume. Of course, it’s not ethical or even very smart to rewrite your resume to match skills you don’t possess. But, if you do possess those skills, or transferable skills that are very close to those skills, go for it! Just make sure you’re ready to persuade a prospective recruiter that you can do the job.
